Sayamagyi Daw Mya Thwin
(1925 - 2017)

Sayamagyi Daw Mya Thwin (Mother Sayamagyi) took her first course at the IMC in April 1953. As her progress was very rapid, Sayagyi U Ba Khin visited her and her husband U Chit Tin twice a day after the course watching over her progress. In May of the same year, during a second 10-day course, she completed her training. Sayagyi U Ba Khin then invited the Venerable Webu Sayadaw to the IMC to confirm or correct his teachings. The Webu Sayadaw expressed his approval of Sayagyi U Ba Khin’s teaching and told Saw Shwe Taik, the first president of Burma: "Sayagyi’s teaching is the same as mine”.
Mother Sayamagyi became Sayagyi U Ba Khin′s foremost disciple. She and Sayagyi U Chit Tin supported Sayagyi U Ba Khin until his demise in 1971. Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin continued to teach at IMC Yangon until they left Myanmar in 1978 to fulfil Sayagyi U Ba Khin′s aspiration to teach meditation to the people of the West. Travelling and teaching all over the world for over 30 years, Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin established centres worldwide, including five centres with Light of the Dhamma Pagodas for meditation.
Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin taught hundreds of ten-day meditation courses for thousands of people during their travels in Asia, Australia, the Americas and Europe. They also held over 20 Bhikkhu ordinations for those students who wished to experience the advantages of meditating in robes, the garb of the Buddhas. Mother Sayamagyi passed away at IMC UK on 28 January 2017.
